FAQ

What resin do you use?

My prints are made from two different types of resin. The white ones are done with a low odour resin which is excellent for prototyping and is fine for less fragile parts. The grey ones are done with an abs-like resin which has an amount of elasticity built in which makes it better for fragile parts. abs-like resin is not available in a low odour format so is only used when necessary. The abs-like resin also needs more support which leads to more post processing work. More recently I have been using a mix of 20% abs-like with 80% of the low odour resin. These are a pale grey and are a good compromise for most parts.

Is resin safe?

All products have been fully cured so there is no risk from wet resin which is toxic. Resin dust is not good for the lungs so if filing or sanding resin please wear a mask to prevent inhaling any dust. It is also recommended to remove resin dust with a wet cloth to ensure the dust is not stirred up and inhaled. Many of the prints are small so it is common sense to keep small parts away from children and pets.

How long can I store resin parts?

Resin parts will degrade over time if left in sunlight. Degradation stops when painted or when stored out of natural light. Resin can also warp over time so parts are best used sooner rather than later though use of warm water can allow larger resin parts to be massaged back to shape.

Are spares available?

I can always supply individual items. For the kits, I usually supply more than the required number of the tiny items required to complete the job as they easily can be lost or damaged. I would always suggest combining such a request with another order as the postage and packing cost is a fixed cost which cannot be reduced.

What is your delivery time?

The goal is to ship orders within a week of the order being received, preferably within a couple of days but some products will be printed to order so too many orders at the same time could impact delivery times.

Can you print in other scales?

Yes, it is possible but not all prints will scale successfully. Please use the contact details at the top and I can take a look to see if the required scale is feasible and what the cost would be. For scaling down to 3.5, 3, 2.5 or 2mm, the cost is likely to be the same as 4mm as much of the cost of an item is outside the cost of raw resin. Scaling up is likely to be more expensive. Email me and I will let you know.

Do you take commissions?

Yes. Please use the contact details at the top and we can discuss the viability and costs. Designing a part for a specific model is likely to need a drawing and some photographs (scans) to see what the original was like and a model to determine what needs to change for the model.

What methods of payment are accepted?

With the opening of the SumUp store I can now take payment via Paypal and via credit card. This does mean that payment is now taken at the point of ordering whereas previously I only sent an invoice at the point of posting. Collecting at an exhibition is possible. Keep an eye on the online store or Facebook to know which exhibitions I am attending.

What if my question is not covered here?

Please send an email to stuart@stmodels.co.uk and I will attempt to answer the question and add it to the FAQ so others can benefit.
